Stepping away from the tank, Trinity moved to stand by a table with many broken and damaged instruments. She recognized one of them, a machine they used to shock her using small pads attached to her skin, and picked it up hesitantly. With a puzzled expression, she turned to Mohon as she spoke.

Hmm... Really..? she would say after he was done. Straightening herself out, she took another look around the room. What he said made sense, as everything seemed far too aged for just twenty years... Leaning over, Trinity picked up one of the many pages on the floor. It was yellowed with time and the text on it was slightly faded, but still legible. The title at the top read, "Studies of the Heart".

Bland enough title, she supposed... But then again, Trinity knew that the scientists were studying her heart and so placed it down upon the table before her.

I... can't say I know what happened here... Last I knew, there was a clean facility with many people inside. But...this is totally different then what I remember. Sure everything in in the same spots, but nothing looks like they've been used in forever...

She was actually kind of happy that it was deserted, that those men weren't doing those awful things anymore. But it was her curiosity that made her question just as to what happened. She turned to look at Mohon once again with a deep expression as she thought.

"Twenty years huh..."

It certainly didn't look like twenty years had passed. That type of destruction... it wasn't possible unless something else intervened. Maybe Heartless or Nobodies ravaged the place once it was abandoned... but why would they abandon it in the first place? They apparently had good equipment and a lot of funds... so what could have caused them to run away, leaving that place behind?

"Maybe they were investigating something that they shouldn't have touched?" Mohon ventured to ask. "It's certainly possible... maybe an experiment went wrong and caused all of this. Still, I don't have any idea of what type of experiment would do something like this... but it must have been pretty big..."

Mohon's curiosity was getting the best of him. He wanted to explore the lab and see what secrets lied deep inside... but he couldn't just forget about Trinity's feelings.

"Sorry." He smiled at her. "This place... must bring back some pretty bad memories to you, right? I wouldn't know how it feels... to be treated like that... so..."

He didn't know what else to add, so he simply ended his words at that.

Trinity looked to the floor. Bad memories, huh? Yeah there were plenty of those, here... But that was then, and this is now. Looking around, she could tell that these people couldn't do anything more to her. That and Mohon's presents made her feel much safer. Turning her back to the table, Trinity leaned against it, placing her hands flat on its surface.

Flashing him a smile as bright as she could, she said. You wanna help me see if anything useful is in here? I never got to explore this place, so I have no idea what's hiding here.

She giggled, trying her best to drown the unpleasent memories in newer, happier ones. Regardless of his answer, Trinity would turn to walk to the cabinet on the far side of the room. Pulling on one of the handles, it easily fell of with little effort put into it. She slowly spun to face uim with an "I didn't do it" expression and knelt down to set the handle on the floor. Wrapping her fingers around the other one, the door wouldn't budge. So Trinity resorted to kicking it persistently. Was the lock rusted over, too...? Now that it proved difficult to access what was inside, Trinity really wanted to see.

Why won't... you open... up? I want to know your contents!

Gah! She let her foot return to the floor as she glared at the lock. She wanted it open, but she didn't want to break anything that might be inside...

"Of course!" He answered. "Exploring is one of my 5 greatest skills!" It probably was, but he had never actually made a "greatest skills" lists, so he wouldn't know what the other 4 were.

Trinity headed towards a cabinet, so the Cat decided to check out other stuff in the meantime to cover more space. There was a desk by the broken glass tube. A couple of boards with papers still attached to them and some documents piled up in a corner drew Mohon's attention to it. He grabbed one of them: the paper had a yellow tone and it was covered in dust, but it was somehow still readable, though with many blank spaces all around.

Code:
Day XX

Test Subject 1 is healthy. No anomalies detected. It is of great importance to keep feeding _________ so that ______________ well. If everything proceeds nicely, then we'll be able to advance to the following stage in the time of 2 weeks. ________ has already acquired the necessary components for __________. We just hope it works. Specifics have been compiled in the attached document.

There was no attached document, but the entry itself was already interesting. They seemed to be writing some logs of sorts... though they only described things related to their experiments. Driven by curiosity, Mohon took another paper, one that looked to be pretty damaged, and read it:

Code:
Day XX

Test Subject 2 is showing rejection to ________. We've decided to change ___________ but it can possibly _________. After the failure from last time, we can't really afford to make more mistakes. We ______ swore that we'd ______________. For our own, we have to succeed.

As expected, it was too damaged to make heads or tails from it... but that didn't matter. The begining of the entry was probably much more important than the rest. It clearly said "Test Subject 2". Just what did that...?

Before he could reach an answer, he heard the sound of Trinity trying to force open a lock. While still holding the paper on his left hand, Mohon walked to her side and put a hand on her shoulder.

"Let me give it a try."

Once Trinity had moved, Mohon would put a hand on the handle and his foot in the other cabinet for better footing. After pushing a number of times, it finally gave in, and Mohon almost fell to the ground along with the contents because of how sudden it was.

As a hand touched her shoulder, Trinity would turn to face Mohon. Stepping aside, she'd let him have at it. It took him a moment, but the second he freed the door from its rusty lock, He nearly fell but seemed to catch himself before either he or the contents fell over.

Trinity applauded him for the victory, thanking him for his help. She then made her way to open the door wider for the both of them to see. It was divided into three shelves on two sides, each side having the shelves at different levels. On the right side, the top two shelves were devoted to paperwork and thick books and the such. The bottom one held tools Trinity found familiar, but not in a positive way. On the left side, the top shelf had more knick-knacks while the second had more files. It was the third, however, that consumed most of the space on the left side, taking up over half of it. In this spot, there was a safe. Unopened and battered, the safe looked as though there were quite a few attempts to open it all of which seemed to fail. The turn dial was scratched deeply, and there was even scorch marks marring it.

Trinity crouched in front of it, looking at it with a puzzled look. I wonder what's in here... She mused out loud, placing a hand to her cheek. Reaching with the other hand, she turned the dial, which took a little effort at first. For each number she turned it to, a heavy click could be heard. Turning to Mohon, Trinity gave him a look to see what he thought of it all.

Along with tools and a large number of papers, Trinity and Mohon found a big safe at the other side of the door. Several marks on its surface indicated that people had tried to open it by force more than once, to no avail. When Trinity turned her head to him, the Cat approached the safe and pushed one of his ears against it as he slowly turned the dial.

"No use." He backed off with a disappointed expression. "If your hearing is good enough, you can usually determine the combination to open the safe by the sound it makes each time the dial goes through a valid number... but it's too busted to actually tell the sounds apart." He sighed. "And I wouldn't try to force it open either, as it could have a defensive mechanism of sorts, such as burning up its contents... it's usually like that when there is something really important inside."

"...and don't ask how I know this." The Cat would smile playfully at the girl. "But hey, maybe the password is in one of these papers."

He took a bunch of documents and started searching for any combination of numbers that may help them.

She eyed him with platful suspicion as he explained how safe locks worked. Why would he know that? Perhaps when she got to know him a little better, Trinity would ask him to further explain. But for now, she would smile and turn back to the cabinet, grabbing a stack of files and plopping on the floor. One by one, she began shifting through the pages, skimming over them for something relevant.

Trying several different possiblities, and even allowing Mohon to should he find something, they spent a great deal of time trying combinations. Trinity was beggining to grow frustrated, irritated, yet determined. This safe would open if it was the last thing she did! Dropping another file off at her side, it landed with a heavy thump. Picking up the next one, she looked at the titling on it. This was her file, having her experiment number on it: T-162H.

Hey Mohon... What order in the alphabet does "T" come in? Like the number order of it? she asked him, turning to look at him with a puzzled expression after she flipped through a fee pages. It was just another idea among many, so she really didn't expect it to actually be the right one. But this room to her is what could be compared to a bed room. Perhaps the scientists were that silly to make it that connected?

"The letter T?"

Confused by the question, Mohon approached Trinity from behind to get a glimpsee of the document she was holding. It said Experiment T-162H in the title... and by the looks of it, it was about her. For better or worse, the paper was hard to read from his position, so Mohon decided to step away and think about Trinity's question.

"Let's see..." The Cat counts in his mind. "It's number 20, right? If we go by that... then why don't we try with 20162"?"

It was a 5-digit number and the only true lead they had, so it'd be stupid not to give it a try. The Cat approached the safe and tried the combination. The dial moved slowly, making worrying sounds as it did. It was hard to tell if the number had been marked or not. However, when Mohon reached the number 2...

"Ah..." Mohon took a step back. "It opened."

The door was indeed open, revealing its contents to the boy and girl.

Trinity peeked over his shoulder, holding her breath as he slowly turned the dial on the safe. When he took the step back, announcing that it was successfully opened, her face light up and she moved to better see what lay inside.

There was a single file, seemingly untouched by time. There was no title on this one, but it was rather thick with leaflets sticking out. Under it, there was a briefcase. Unfortunately, this was locked as well, latched together with some buckles and a four digit combination. Picking up the file, Trinity made a face that showed her surprise as to just how heavy it was. Setting it on the floor to her left, she reached back in and grabbed the briefcase's handle and pulled it out. The clean metal reflected the dull lighting, looking almost as though it were freshly polished.

Holding it up to her ear, Trinity shook it a bit. Frowning when she heard nothing, she began mindlessly spinning the four number wheels that would serve as the lock to briefcase. Looking at Mohon for a moment in thought, she looked back to the lock and spun them to 1-0-0-1. This was her "birthday", the first day of the tenth month. Surpisingly enough, the buckles clicked and snapped open. Trinity jumped when this happened as she didn't truly expect that to be the combination.

Crouching down, she placed the briefcase on the floor and flipped open the top. Inside there was a decent sized jar fitted into a black velvet depression.

What is this..? Trinity mumbled, gently picking up the jar out of its case.

Inside, floating in a translucent yellow preservation liquid, was a clawed hand. This disturbed Trinity quite a bit, and she almost dropped it upon realizing what it was. However, she simply turned to Mohon and held it out for him to take it.

What they found inside the briefcase could only be called an unexpected discovery: a dark, clawed hand inside a jar of preservation liquid. Mohon could understand Trinity's surprise, as his reaction had been more or less the same.

He took the jar and inspected it from up-close: it was a hand, no doubt about it. The claws made it seem as if it belonged to some sort of beast, but it was actually a human hand... or humanoid, at least. The skin was pitch black, with no traces of ever being of a different color, and just looking at it made the Cat feel unease in his heart. Yes, it was the same feeling that a Heartless gave, but...

"It can't be a Heartless." He would say before long. "If you cut anything from a Heartless' body, it merely dissipates in the air... so it shouldn't be possible to preserve anything like that, much less a hand."

But then what was it? To whom did it belong to? Mohon had no idea, but he could at least formulate a hypothesis: the people of that lab hadn't stopped after the incident with Trinity... and thus had decided to create something that was way beyond their boundaries. He thought about sharing his thoughts with Trinity and asking for her opinion...

...but he didn't say anything, for something had brought every single muscle of his body to a halt. It was all caused by a single sound coming from far away.

Steps. Slow and heavy steps, coming from the depths of the lab. He didn't know who or what was approaching... but it didn't feel right. Somehow, Mohon "knew" that those steps weren't those of a human. A Heartless? A Nobody? Something else? They couldn't just stand there to find out.

The Cat would take Trinity's hand in a rush while putting a finger above his mouth, telling her that way to not make a noise. He would lead her below a table that was by the shelves they were searching. It was a bit cramped down there, enough for their shoulders to touch at the slightest move, but they had to put up with it.

The steps got closer and closer, enough for Trinity to hear them with ease, and when they stopped, the sight of a pitch-black pair of legs would come to them. It looked like a person, but it clearly wasn't one. It moved around a little, as if searching for something in the room, but there was barely any light and they were well hidden be table. Before long, the "creature" would step back and exit the room.

"Just..." Mohon would speak once he felt that they were not in immediate danger. "What was that...?"

As soon as he took the jar from her Trinity began wiping her hands against her pants, trying to rid herself of the shiver that was sent throughout her entire body.

What in the worlds in that thing from? What were those scientists doing after I was no longer here?

Trinity turned to look at Mohon as he spoke. It didn't seem like much more than him talking to himself. But Heartless? Those were the creatures that were born from and sought out the darkness in peoples' hearts, right? She was about to ask on confirm this matter when she caught him staring at her. Trinity didn't get the chance to ask this question or any other ones as him hand shot out and grabbed hers, making a gesture for her to be quiet.

Trinity could see his urgency, and began feeling concerned as they hid under the table. She didn't mind so much the little room there was under it, not after she began hearing the footsteps from somewhere down the hall. Trinity had to will her knees to stop knocking together, and placed a hand over her mouth to hush her whimpering. What was going on? What was this feeling prickling the back of her neck?

Her grip on Mohon's hand tightened as the creature entered the room. Pitch-black legs walked around the room, stopping every so often as it seemed like it was searching for something. For them? For the jar? Trinity looked down into her lap to see the jar there, tipped over into its side.

Is this what its looking for?

The creature at one point stopped just before the table if only for a moment, and then left. Though it was gone, she didn't move, she didn't speak, doing nothing until Mohon had spoken.

I-I... don't know. Trinity was whispering as quietly as she could for the chance that it might still be lingering around. She turned to him with tears welling up in the corners of her eyes. Mohon, I'm scared. I want to leave.

Never would she have expected to come across all this when she brought them in here. This was far more than she bargained for, and quite frankly, she had had enough.

Toughen up! There's things here you need to learn. There was a nagging sensation in the back of her head. Don't be so afraid. You're not alone. There it was again, only... this one felt softer, kinder.

Trinity looked around to find no source for the feeling and blinked in a frightened confusion. What was that?

Facing against scary creatures isn't an uncommon thing for a person who traveled the worlds for so many years like Mohon. Heartless with morbid forms and strange creatures living in the mountains, amongst others, were in the list. If he had to say why this particular creature was even more scary than most of the monsters he had seen so far in his life, it'd be the place where they encountered it: a dark, abandoned laboratory made up of tight corridors and small rooms. So not only the creature induced fear in his heart... but the "setting" of their encounter did as well.

But you can still be brave, even if you're scared. Feeling Trinity's grip on his hand tighten made Mohon remember that fact. Yes, the girl by his side was far worse than him... and he couldn't ignore that. No, he just couldn't ignore Trinity feeling like that...

"Hey..." Slowly, he'd raise his other hand to Trinity's head and would slowly stroke her hair, just like he did while they were outside the laboratory. "Let's do something, ok?" He wasn't speaking but whispering, trying to make as little sound as he could. "If you really want to leave, then I'll do my best to take you out of this laboratory..."

"...but if you'd like to search around a bit more, to learn what you need to learn, then I'll definitely protect you at all costs." He'd show her a soft, and somewhat sad, smile. "You may not have another chance to see the place of your birth again, after all. Even if it's painful... that's not a chance you should miss: because there are some that don't even know where their birthplace is."

He talked from experience.

The hand on her head had a calming effect and Trinity closed her eyes as she let it do its work. After a moment, and after listening to what Mohon had to say, she'd nod and look to him with soft green eyes.

Just... a little bit longer then. Maybe there's other rooms that have secrets, too. Trinity gave him her best smile at that moment. Mohon was very brave to stay here with her, and was kind enough to protect her should the creature come back. She would have done so herself, but the art of battle was not one that she was well versed in and knew just about nothing that would be useful in a fight.

Crawling out from under the table, Trinity swiveled her head form on side to the other to double check that the coast was clear. Standing to her feet, she held the jar under her arm and gave it a discontent look.

Should we take this with us? She asked Mohon, turning to look at him as she held it up for him to see again.

Then again... even if they were to take it, there was sure to be other things they might want to take. Where would they put all of it..?

"Then that's what we're going to do."

After crawling out of the table, Mohon looked around the place to make sure the creature was nowhere to be seen and focused on his sense of hearing, trying to make out any sound that may resemble that of a step, as small as it may be. Fortunately, it didn't seem to be close enough for the Cat to hear, so they could relax for the moment. When Trinity asked about the jar, Mohon said:

"We should take it with us, just in case. Let's see..." He took the jar and walked to the suitcase, putting it back where it was. "We can carry it inside this suitcase, and we can also put everything else we find inside."

It was time to explore more of the laboratory: as Mohon stepped out of the room, he slowly drew out his sword, a single-edged rapier, and held it with his right hand as he carried the suitcase with his left hand. That way he could also use the suitcase as some sort of shield, if he ever needed it.

"Let's go." He'd say seriously, though flashing a smile so to ease a little the fear in Trinity's heart.

Trinity watched as the he put the jar back where they found it. Laying beside it were her file and the rather large one found inside the safe. Picking up both of them, she held them close to her body, folllowing Mohon's lead as they began to leave the room. His smile was reassuring and Trinity returned the gesture, nodding in agreement.

As they both made their way down the hall, further into the building, it seemed like many more of the rusted doors were falling off their hinges or were already on the floor. Trinity recognized one room and the operation room where they strapped her into a bed on many occasions. There was hardly anything in there of interest, so Trinity paid it no mind and continued.

And another as what was formerly a mess hall. The scientists lived in house and were devoted to their studies so every and anything they might need to live was supplied there. But surely there wasn't anything in there but moldy food and dirty dishes.

And then there was the storage room. Trinity stopped in front of this open door, looking in. It was more of a warehouse than a storage room due to its size. Several of the overhead lights flickered, most of them not even lit to begin with. This cast a shadowy light over the room.

Wanna go in there? Trinity tore her gaze from the seemingly endless room and looked at Mohon, pointing in. There was definitely going to be something in there.

They passed through many other rooms before reaching the warehouse. An operations room that gave Mohon an eerie feeling and... a mess hall? The place seemed to be much bigger than he initially thought. It wasn't just a laboratory... it was an entire secret hidden under Radiant Garden's castle. How come no one had noticed something like that until now? No, maybe the truth was hidden from them with more than just illusory walls...

However, the warehouse was even more amazing: a huge room with rows and rows of boxes, tools and many different substances inside jars similar to the one inside the suitcase.

"It'd be a nice idea... but it'd take us a while to search the entire area. I mean... this place is HUGE! But sure, let's go."

He left the suitcase by the entrance and stepped into the room. He thought that carrying that thing around while they searched the room would only slow down their place. Mohon would retrieve it once they left.

"Now, where to start..."

There appeared to be different sections depending on what you were looking for: one had different materials for experimenting, either on substances or living beings, so they could ignore that. There was a corner filled with different papers and files, and it'd obviously take them a while to reach information that they could understand.

"Maybe we should-"

A sound. Again. Steps. Outside the warehouse. Still far away, but dangerous.

"Trinity, you start searching..." He'll say to the girl. "I'll keep watch on the door." He'll rush to the door with silent steps and close it midways, leaving a small opening for him to keep watch into the corridor.

Trinity stepping into the room, looking from one side to the other. She was never allowing in there before and she was beginning to understand why. There was just so much stuff. Behind her, Trinity heard Mohon pondering where to begin their search. She smiled, momentarily forgetting her earlier fear as she made to ask him if he'd ever done something like this before.

Her words caught in her throat as she told her to begin looking. When he said that he'd be watching the door, she began to wonder if he heard something and wasn't telling her. Trinity confirmed this assumption when she started to make her way into the warehouse, seeing him stand by the door that he kept open just a crack.

The possibilities worried her that Mohon might get hurt without her knowing, but Trinity reminded herself that he was a swordsman, and that he'd be just fine on his own.

She passed one aisle after another, around twenty in total, and looked down each one as she did so. It was in the next aisle that something caught her eye.

Ladybird? Trinity stopped to turn down the aisle, looking at the rag doll at the end of it.

It was the only comfort that she had in her short childhood. With braided brown pigtails made of yarn and a simple white dress, the doll had vanished shortly before Trinity's heart split. Trotting towards it, she was going to pick it up. Until...it stood up on it's feet and began walking away.

Wait! Ladybird, come back! She called out to the doll, picking up her pace to catch up to the retreating doll. Trinity rounded another corner to find that it wasn't anywhere to be found.

Passing each aisle now at a faster pace, she was on a mission to find the doll. Almost to the corner of the warehouse, she found it, standing a few feet off and staring right at her. There you are. Why'd you run off like that? Trinity smiled and stepped closer, picking it up in her hands. It was cold to the touch and where was a weird feeling about it.

Slowly, the stitching that made up its mouth turned up into a smile. Startled, Trinity dropped the doll and stepped back. But it simply stood to its feet and began walking towards her. Trinity let out a small scream of surprise, taking more steps back. But the doll's advancement didn't cease and Trinity turned to run.

As Trinity walked further away into the warehouse in search of something that may give her answers, Mohon watched the dark corridor through the small opening between the door and the wall. He could hear the same heavy steps drawing closer and closer at a slow pace, as if intentionally wanting to make him nervous. At some point, Mohon thought they were close enough for him to see the one making the noise... but there was nothing there, and the steps stopped before long.

"What the-" Confused, Mohon opened the door a little and stuck out his head.

Grave mistake.

Something approached from the corner of his left eye. It was fast, and not only that, but it looked dangerous. Mohon had a split of second to jump out to the corridor to avoid the blow. He rolled once through the ground and quickly got on his feet with his sword pointing at whatever had attacked him.

A clawed hand. The same hand that they found inside the briefcase. And a pair of legs. The same legs that they had seen from below the table.

Some would call it a man and some would call it a monster. Judging by the overall shape of the body, that "thing" looked like a really tall man with extremely long limbs. The entirety of its body was pitch black, almost indistinguishable from the darkness around it, its left hand was missing and there were strange marks on its chest. But the face... the face was what scared Mohon the most. It had eyes, a nose, a mouth... but it was expresionless, completely expresionless... and its eyes were yellow, just like those of a Heartless.

"Shit, this looks like trouble..." The creature was by the door and Mohon feared that it may go towards Trinity... but for some reason, it walked towards Mohon and not inside the warehouse. Had it not noticed Trinity at all? Then better for him. There was no reason to put her in danger.

As the creature walked to him, Mohon charged at him in order to test his opponent's strength: it looked slow, so it probably was all about strength... not. When Mohon tried to stab it in the chest, it immediately responded by sending a punch with claws and all to his face. Mohon had no choice but to duck... but the arm strength of the creature was insane. It was enough to actually force the air out of the way... and when Mohon tried to use his position to slash at it, he barely managed to make a small wound on its chest.

Change of plans: retreat. The Cat jumped backwards and started to run through the corridor while making sure that the creature was following. He entered the mess hall and closed the doors behind his back. He gained his distance and turned to the door... only to see it being blow away by a single swipe of the creature's arm.

"T-this is going to be troublesome..." Mohon had a nervous smile on his face. Of course, he hadn't heard Trinity's scream because of the rockus the creature was making, nor he was in any position to rush to her help, even if he desperately wanted to.

What was wrong with Ladybird..? The doll had grown five time it's height and now stood as tall as Trinity, wielding a wide edged knife. Backed into a corner, Trinity was staring with eyes like saucers in horror at the advancing doll. The cute smile made of stitches and button eyes only seemed to amplify the creepiness the doll seemed to emit. Its tipsy footsteps against the cement flooring made no sound, and there was a haunting aura about the whole scene.

S-Stay back, Ladybird! I-I don't w-want to hurt you... Trinity's fumbling words betrayed the brave words she attempted to speak.

The doll ignored her warning and raised the knife above its head, stepping even closer still. Why? Why was Ladybird doing this? What had Trinity done to make the doll hate her so? She did everything she could to love and care for the doll, and was distraught when it was no where to be found. The scientists told her that they sent Ladybird away to a doctor because she was sick. Trinity supposed it was her fault for forgetting about the doll after some time. Was that why it was mad?

P-Please don't b- Trinity cut her sentence short to scream, ducking for cover as the doll swung the knife down at her. There was a heavy thunk above her and Trinity quickly looked up to see that the blade had cleaved itself into the wooden shelves she was pinned against.

Taking the oppurtunity, Trinity fell to her knees and crawled under and between the legs of the doll, just as quickly getting to her feet and bolting away as fast as she could towards the exit of the store room.

Leave. We have to leave. I need to find Mohon and we need to leave...! Trinity keep telling herself this as she ran, out the room, into and down the hall, past several doors. She spotted the briefcase and the files by the door to the store room and took the split second to retrieve them before she continued running out into the hall, too afraid to look back to see if Ladybird was still following.

Trinity passed by the mess hall with both Mohon and the black creature inside in a flash of colors, not even taking the time to look in, only to trip over debris in the hallway sometime after. Her scream could be heard echoing off the walls as she crashed to the floor. The files spilled out of her hands and were scattered in every which way as the briefcase slid some feet away. Getting to her knees, Trinity scrambled to collect the pages and hurriedly stach them back into the files.

Then there was the prickling at the back of her neck and she slowly turned around to see the doll walking towards her at a slow pace. She was scared, needless to say, and Trinity began whimpering as she quickly finished picking up a majority of the pages and got up to run again, leaving some of them behind. Swiping the briefcase up on her way, she made her way to go find a room to hide in. Hopefully Ladybird was as bad at hide-and-seek as she remembered...

The creature walked at Mohon at an incredibly slow pace, but the Cat knew that it wouldn't be wise to approach him. He stood at the far end of the mess hall, so it'd take his opponent a while to reach his position. He needed to think of a way to deal with it before then.

For starters, the creature seemed to have a body made entirely of darkness, just like a Heartless... no, it may very well be a Heartless, but not a normal one: its skin was hard compared to the other creatures of darkness and it had a really uncommon humanoid shape. More than that, instead of dissipating in the air, cut limbs seemed to remain in the physical world: the hand inside the jar was proof of it.

"Though that also means that it's not impossible to hurt it."

His thoughts were cut by seeing what the creature was doing: it stopped by a table, grabbed it from one of its legs and lifted it above its head. It was one of those big tables where dozens of people were supposed to eat at once, typical of mess halls, but it seemed to weight nothing for the dark monster. Mohon rolled aside in time to avoid being hit by the table sent flying towards him with enough strength to actually make a huge dent in the wall at his back.

And then he heard the scream; Trinity's scream. His feet rushed forward the moment he did. His mind didn't think of anything else other than reaching the place where she was. Mohon confronted the creature head on, first slashing at the left side of its torso, then stepping back to avoid one of its incredibly strong punches, and then gathering electrical energy on his blade and releasing it all at once in the middle of its chest.

It seemed to have hurt, as the creature emmited something akin to a shriek and stopped its movements for a second, enough for Mohon to dash to the other side, into the corridor.

"Trinity!" He'd shout, not caring if he was heard by something else. "Shit..."

The sound hadn't come from the warehouse, but the corridor itself. It was possible that she had encountered something dangerous and had run away to protect herself.

Worried, the Cat set off for the rest of the rooms to find her.

Trinity turned into the closest room and quickly hid behind the first thing large enough to hide her - two tall cylindrical water heaters. This room was something akin to a utility room, with water heaters and furnaces and all the other homely appliances. The only light source that reached inside the room was cast in from the hallway making looking inside where she hid against the wall rather difficult.

Peeking in a gap that was no more than a two centimeters wide, Trinity did everything she could to calm her ragged breathing. When she heard her name being shouted from down the hall, she wanted to go find him and leave like she wanted to. But the shadow cast on the doorway made Trinity freeze on the spot, her eyes flashing at a crazy pace between colors.

In walked Ladybird, knife in hand and the stitched smile still on the doll's fabric face. But it didn't move from where it stood, staying in the doorway. Had she been able to breath properly, Trinity would have been hyperventilating due to how afraid she was, tears forming in her eyes.

Please find me. Please find me. Trinity prayed to herself that Mohon would soon find her.

Then the doll's legs began to move, walking further into the room, and left her range of sight. The light pitter-patter of its footsteps went from one side of the room to the other, momentarily passing by her as it did so. Trinity was doing everything in her power to not make a sound.

The pitter-patter stopped, and for a moment, Trinity thought it had left the room without her seeing. But the button eye that she suddenly found herself looking into through the gap between the heaters said otherwise.

Trinity screamed, backing herself up against the wall as best she could as the doll raised the knife and stared hacking at the water heaters. Steam started billowing from the broken pipes and the gashes in the metal, easily filling the room with the hot mist and out into the hall. That didn't stop Ladybird, however, as it continued to slash away at the metal. Trinity's screams were mixed with cries of fear as she begged for the Cat to soon find her.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, you shitty monster?!"

The blunt side of a rapier would hit Ladybird's body from behind, tossing her aside against the wall, forcing her to drop the knife and stop her threatening movements once and for all. While running through the corridor, Mohon had heard Trinity's screams and had rushed to her help. The room where she was hiding was full of mist, released because of the broken pipes... but in the midst of everything, he somehow found her and just in time to save her skin.

"I suppose we've been here for too long." Mohon would sheathe his rapier, take Trinity's hand with his right hand and the suitcase with his left. "Let's go."

He'd take Trinity through the mist, out to the corridor. The moment they stepped out, a chair would come flying their way, but the Cat would be fast enough to move Trinity out of the way while taking only a small hit to his arm. It hurt, but it was a pain he could endure, at least for a while.

The one that had thrown the chair at them was the creature. It seemed to have taken it from the mess hall... and it would proably throw everything it could as long as Mohon and Trinity weren't on his reach.

"As if we're going to wait for you!" Mohon dashed through the corridor with Trinity behind, concentrating only in reaching the exit. He heard sounds behind his back, different types of movement, not only from the creature, as well as the distinguishable sound of a knife cutting through rusted metal. He didn't look back, he didn't stop once, not until they reached the end of the corridor.

They were outside again. Sunlight received them with all its might, forcing the Cat to close his eyes for a second. Before doing anything else, he dropped the suitcase and turned around, pointing his sword at the illusory wall. He waited for a minute, two minutes, feeling that those creatures could come out at any moment... but they didn't. There was no sound, and after a third minute, Mohon felt that the danger had passed.

"I think we're... safe..."

She heard him, Mohon's voice, and the sound of the knife scrapping against the metal stopped. The dark room was far to filled with steam for her to see what was going on. Hearing him again and feeling the hand taking hers, Trinity was overwhelmed with relief.

Please. she whimpered, still shaky from the ordeal. As they stepped out into the corridor, Trinity could feel herself being moved out of the way as something flew at them - a chair. The surprise of it warranted a small scream form her and she looked down the hall to see what had thrown it, being led by the hand down the hallway.

It was a haunting sight, the black creature with skin of darkness. Its yellow orbs seemed to dig into the very essence of her being. But its slow movement was more than enough to escape with, as the Cat had made mention of.

Running straight for the exit, Mohon took an offensive stance as he stared at the illusion that was the wall. Trinity behind him, looking around him on wait. She didn't want to stray to far from him, for the small chance that something might try to attack them again. She felt safest near him, safest by his side. Watching, waiting, Trinity heard him announce that the coast was clear.

I sure hope so... Trinity sank to her knees, finally allowing herself to relax and take a deep breath.

Mohon sheathed his sword and released a sigh of relief. He didn't know what that thing was... but somehow, they had escaped from its claws. They were outside; they were safe. That's everything he needed to know.

The Cat approached the suitcase and opened it. Good, the jar was safe. Of course, they had no use for the severed hand of a monster... but maybe they could get some useful information if they gave it to the right person. Mohon knew of a man that was well acquainted with beings of darkness, to the point of being called a Lord of Darkness himself. He could go deliver that hand to him, that is, if Trinity wanted to. He'd respect her wishes if she just wanted to get rid of it.

He sat next to Trinity, only then realizing that he had let go of her hand at some point. Well, he had taken her out of that laboratory, so it wasn't necessary anymore.

"Are you alright?" He asked to be sure. "You're not hurt anywhere, right?"

Mohon had a bruise in his arm that was starting to hurt, but it wasn't anything serious. He shouldn't worry the girl with something like that.

"...heh, that was one scary experience, huh?" Instead, he showed her his typical cheerful smile. "It'll keep me away from dark places for a while, I guess."

Y-Yeah... I think so.. Trinty turned to look at Mohon as he sat next to her. I'm fine. Just... relieved...

He smiled at her and it filled her with a sense of serenity. Despite all that had happened, he could smile. Trinity giggled softly, giving him a smile of her own. If he could smile then she would too.

Yeah. No more dark places for me for a very long time, if at all... She looked over to the jar and the files tucked away beside it. We have them now, but... what are were gonna do with them?
