11.1.2017 - Kingdom Hearts RP is now closed. We'd like to thank everyone who invested time on the site for contributing to a wonderful experience which lasted for many years. All stories must eventually end, but while this may seem bittersweet, it can't be stressed enough what a pleasure it was to create and share them with you all. Goodbye everyone.

It had been many years since Nicholas had set foot in this castle. He had remembered it in those early days, back when he was but a soldier fighting for the Oblivion Empire, back when the old wars were raging and hope was but a fleeting thing. In that time, the Castle had changed little - but he was a whole new man, so to speak, all that he once was and more. Since regaining his heart, his memories also had begun to resurface, slowly.

As he walked through the doors of the Fortress, he again took in the sights of the strange building. He was assaulted by memories - forgotten vestiges of a life he had once shared with a being that was now apart of himself. Horrific scenes of battles long past entered his mind, and he knew this was going to be a worthwhile visit.

"Jeremi, are you here?" He called out, ignoring the voices in his head. His voice carried and echoed throughout the empty halls, and he was sure the Lord had heard him.

"Your Majesty." Said d'Artagnan. "Are you sure your friend is here? It seems an unusual place for a nobleman to make his home. I'm sure you would be much safer if you had an escort."

Nicholas nodded. "I'm sure. Go back to the ship and wait for me, d'Artagnan. The Steward and I have much to discuss: And besides..." He grinned. "This is a social call, not a state visit, so armed guards aren't necessary. And as well, Jeremi and I are dear friends. There is no need."

The Musketeer nodded slowly, then bowed, almost gingerly. "As you wish, sire."

"Jeremi. My old friend." Nicholas said, turning back to the staircase that led to the higher floor. "I hope you are well, brother."

Jeremi was, indeed, in the throne room.

...But, not in the throne. No, he gazed out into the shadows, through a stained-glass window. Something was troubling him.

He had been there. Seen the dead body of Shirou Velox. And, he'd tried to finish what he'd started, only for Onyx's Horsemen to show up, save their master, hinder his attacker, and...

...And. That was the kicker. It was four on one. And, he had reason to believe that, between the four of them? They'd have no trouble ending him. ...The pink-haired one. Death, he thought she was called. He had no real idea of what she was capable. If the souls present at the Worlds Congress were right, she was an illusionist. And, he knew first-hand the potency of illusion. War... ...War was kinda obvious. Famine and Pestilence, he had no clue. But, if he had to guess, Famine could decay living bodies, and Pestilence would be a plague warden. War, backed by any of the other three, would probably be enough to end him. All four? He should be dead.

...But, he wasn't. ...People that everyone claimed as heartless mass-murderers. ...Even after trying to kill their master...

...They showed him mercy.

"...I am disturbed, old friend. ...What do you know of this group? Apocalypse, they call themselves."

"Very little. I know this 'Death' woman. And I have seen her fight. She is a powerful combatant, but ultimately my apprentice, Mohon, was able to defeat her." He mentioned his student with a hint of pride. "His training is going well. And he is recovering from the injuries he sustained in that battle well."

He looked around the castle, seeing the new interior that Jeremi had lain out. Then he walked over to his old friend and put one hand on his shoulder, hoping that would comfort him.

"We are same-hearted brother. But together, we will find a way to stop the spread of evil." He said calmly, reassuringly. "And besides, you have not yet seen me at my peak. Xicohlnas and I were one and the same, yet different. But now, we are together again."

And with that, he grinned and flexed his muscles. "The past has been kind to me: I've regained all of my former strength. I am all that I was and more. What about you? Have you been well these past few years?"

"A Horseman? Defeated? Perhaps I should study under you, then."

THAT was a surprise. Less so, after the events Where Nothing Gathers. But, still. To hear of a member of Apocalypse being beaten... Perhaps even killed... ...It gave him hope. He was certain he'd have nothing to do with it. No, he was well past the age of being a Hero. Just some old fool, now.

...Some old fool.

"Time has been kind to me, I would like to think. But, against these new threats, I am unconvinced that I will be as able to withstand the hellfire of combat, as I did without a Heart."

Jeremi sighed, turning to sit on the windowsill. He looked up at his old friend, with a weak, weary smile, unfitting of someone of his apparent age.

"...I've lived more lifetimes than I care to count, since last we met. Walked away from wars, marked the death of whole civilizations. I've seen things you'd never believe, Nick. ...Lost things you'll never understand. And I've learned. Dire secrets, forbidden knowledge that would set even gods ablaze."

He rubbed his shoulder, absentmindedly, as though it pained him.

"...I've lived so long. Seen so much. And, now, back here... Back home... ...I fear my time may be running out."

"And I thought I was the old one." He said. "Though I do not look it, I am forty one years old, but given my time in the Void between - I am about ten years older than my thirty one when Xic and I separated."

When he thought about that statement, he looked at Jeremi, seeing the man whole - hearing him speak of secrets and the passage of time, he was reminded in a way of a wizened old man.

"Time has a way of catching up with us, brother. For my every decade, there was a time of trial. Not without cost. And none of it ever passed easily. But, I endured - and I emerged stronger. And I remain a good, honorable man at my core. But perhaps, have you considered retiring?"

Jameson looked at his friend in the eye, and he could see the tiredness in him. The years, and the many trials he'd endured had aged him.

"This is an age where the Old Order is fading. Soon it will be gone entirely, and all that will be left are forgotten remnants. But where others would despair, I see reason to hope: My apprentice for one, shows strength and vitality even I did not possess at my peak. He has great potential. I believe, given time, he will master the darkness in his soul and become greater than I."

"And if you're ever feeling up to it, I always offer you a place in my world - the Land of Musketeers. There, you could live out the rest of your days, comfortable and protected by my army. And you would be treated well; like an honored guest."

"...Retirement? Now? With the threats that exist?"

The very idea seemed ludicrous. Onyx and his lot were running roughshod over all creation, and, someone had to stand against them. ...If they were truly the monsters so many claimed. Now, he wasn't entirely convinced; monsters can't show mercy.

...But, then... His cynicism wasn't helping anyone. He'd seen quite a bit of the worst of humanity, and, even of those who were paragons, he found little cause to rejoice. Mostly from a lack of faith. Not in the heroes, specifically. In humans in general. But, when he could set aside his lemon-tinted glasses, there were a few he could truly see as being able to make a difference in these worlds. He had the pleasure of knowing so many. So very many.

"But, then... ...Perhaps it is time. Of all of us who still remain from the ancient days of Oblivion, only I remain in the spotlight. An old codger, pretending at a hero's journey meant for others to take. For all that I denounce the old ways, by remaining here, in power, I'm keeping those old ways alive. I'm the very last of the old guard, standing guard in the old ways. ...Maybe it's time for the old guard to finally stand down."

With a sigh, he looked back out the window.

"...Not sure what I'd do with myself, were I to step aside. Surely, I'd go mad from the boredom."

...A moment, then, he chuckled.

"Don't suppose you're in need of a court wizard?"

"I am in need of someone of magical assistance, but the choice is yours." Nicholas could sense his friend's sorrow, and he was determined to relieve it - even if it were a little bit. "And I could always use a jester - but then, I've already got one of those in the form of Mohon, even if he doesn't realize it!" He joked - and he laughed. It felt good to finally meet again with another member of the Old Order.

His expression turned lightly serious. His tone was slow and soft, but he carried the undertones of his usual self-confident, poised self.

"I am sure this latest crisis will abate sooner or later. Such is the way of the worlds. After all - it's not our part to master the weather - only to wait until the storm has passed and rebuild. Though the old ways are gone, the message they leave behind; the lessons we learn endure. Rejoice my friend! Creation is not as cruel as you think."
